Where to Eat and Drink in the Dogpatch

Experience the unique bars and restaurants putting San Francisco's Dogpatch neighborhood on the culinary map.

San Francisco has so many unique neighborhoods that visiting the City by the Bay is more like visiting a dozen cities in one. One neighborhood to keep your eyes on is the Dogpatch. This once industrial neighborhood, just south of SoMa and its major attractions, is now one of the trendiest spots in the city.

Situated on the waterfront, Dogpatch has beautiful views to enjoy while you relax at some of the most exciting restaurants in San Francisco. Almost every place in the neighborhood is easily accessed via San Francisco Muni's T line, making it easier for you to try multiple establishments.

Here are our favorite spots for drinking and dining in the Dogpatch.

CoffeeShop

900 22nd St.

New to the neighborhood in 2024, CoffeeShop has quickly amassed a huge local following. It's menu of global grinds and delicious pastries have people lining up well past the morning rush. Open daily, 7 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Daily Driver

Dogpatch Saloon

2496 Third St.

Originally opened in 1912, Dogpatch Saloon is one of the oldest bars in San Francisco. During Prohibition, the bar became a soda shop speakeasy. The Saloon is known for its cheap drinks and microbrews. Though it’s named after the neighborhood, the decor is all puppy power. Open Monday - Thursday, 2 p.m. - 2 a.m.; Friday, Noon - 2 a.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. - 2 a.m.

Gilberth’s Latin Fusion

2427 Third St.

Small bites is the name of the game at Gilberth’s. Some of our favorites are the Bruselas fritas (fried Brussel sprouts with Chile lime and manchego) and the nachos (fancy nachos with refried beans, cheese, sour cream, and guacamole). If you're looking for a larger portion, definitely try the carne asada or chilaquiles. Open Tuesday - Friday, 10:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. and 5 - 9:30 p.m.; open Saturday, 5 - 9:30 p.m.

Giuliana's Just for You Cafe

A popular spot with locals that made a welcome return after a brief pandemic-induced hiatus, Giuliana's is the closest thing the Dogpatch has to a traditional roadside diner. Their breakfast menu includes a variety of pancakes (buttermilk or cornemal!) and Mexican favorites, while their lunch menu features hearty sandwiches. And don't dream of leaving without having at least two of their beignets! Open Wednesday - Monday, 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Hard Knox Café

2526 Third St.

Visitors can dig into some serious down-home comfort food here. Hard Knox serves large tin trays of collard greens, mac and cheese, and fried chicken. Feeling more adventurous? Try the oxtail, the catfish, or the Cajun meatloaf. Open daily, 11 a.m. - 9 p.m.

Ikon Coffee

1302 22nd St.

Don't say we said so, but this might be the best-kept secret in the neighborhood. Ikon Coffee offers excellent cappucinos and lattes at its cozy, corner location, where the sun always seems to shine. They have recently expanded their menu to offer more food items, including satisfying breakfast sandwiches and delicious croissants. Open daily, 7 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Marcella's Lasagneria

1099 Tennessee St.

Given their limited hours, the homemade pasta dishes at Marcella's Lasagneria are among the neighborhood's hottest commodities. You might not think of lasagna as brunch food, but there's no wrong time to enjoy the hefty servings, made with love, at Marcella's. Open Tuesday - Saturday, 10 a.m - 2 p.m.

Mission Rock Resort

817 Terry Francois Blvd.

Mission Rock Resort is known for its mimosa brunch, served on the patio—but it’s so much more than that. Enjoy a dinner with their spicy Cajun gumbo, ceviche and bay shrimp Louie. Bonus: it’s dog-friendly! Open Tuesday - Friday, 11:30 a.m. - 8:30 p.m.; open Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Piccino

1001 Minnesota St.

Piccino has a constantly rotating and time-sensitive menu (seriously; snacks only, 3-5 p.m.!). The delightful variety makes the experience worthwhile. Want something sweet? Order the grapefruit float with candied grapefruit ice cream. Looking for a great appetizer to share? Sink your teeth into bruschetta topped with broccolini and pine nuts or persimmon and peanuts. Downright hangry? Head straight for the pasta with nettle pesto and peas. Open Wednesday - Sunday, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. and 5 - 9 p.m.

The Sea Star

2289 Third St.

Sea Star might be the quirkiest bar in the Dogpatch, with its gaudy nautical decor, jukebox, and bar-side pizza oven. Popular with locals for its event nights and laid-back vibe, it's definitely worth stopping in. Open weekdays, 4 p.m. - 1 a.m.; open Saturday, 2 p.m. - 2 a.m.; open Sunday, 2 p.m. - 1 a.m.
